Introduction of a damage prevention inspection

Inspection to prevent damages developed on the initiative of insurers and to be introduced in the course of 2004, with regard to the insurability of the inland shipping.
In view of the market situation and the results of the workshops, the initiative was taken by the insurers, represented in IVR, to introduce a Damage Prevention Inspection. In the past IVR develops a verification list to judge the condition of the installations onboard barges (to be) insured. Our first practical experiences and analysing the results of the Damage Prevention Inspections our conclusion is that this instrument gives insurers as well as owners of inland vessels a good overview of the actual condition of the installations onboard the barges involved.
The DPI verification list and the inspection mainly refer to engines, installations and their present condition.
The first analyses of the Engine Registration System it appears that particularly in the field of maintenance, problems occur. By means of a Damage Prevention Inspection, the introduction of maintenance systems on the basis of simple procedures on board - which will demonstrate the maintenance to the insurer - is aimed at.
